There are probably lots of reasons that you can come up with to delay the start of your alcohol abstinence.  The two most popular reasons for putting it off are usually that you do not feel the need to change anything about your life and that you feel that you cannot succeed in making this kind of change.  You might also think that you cannot stop drinking or maybe you have been unsuccessful at stopping in the past.  It is possible that drinking has been such a big part of your life for so long that is it almost impossible to think about what your life would be like without the constant presence of alcohol.  Regardless of the reasons that you come up with not to stop drinking, it might be time for you to take hold of the reasons that you should stop drinking.

One of the best ways to start thinking about stopping and getting help for you drinking habit is to make the decision that you are ready to make significant changes to your life.  You have to decide for yourself if the things that are positive about your drinking life outweigh the negatives of your drinking life.  You need to weigh these things because going into treatment for alcohol addiction with ambivalence can make your recovery more difficult than it needs to be.  Make some lists and answer a few questions for yourself about the positives and negatives associated with your alcohol addiction.

What are the positives about continuing to drink?

To answer this question, you might think about things like how drinking makes you feel.  Does it make you feel more confident? Does it help you be better able to talk to people or deal with social situations? Do you like the taste of alcohol?  Does it make you feel like you are more fun?

What are the negatives about continuing to drink?

To answer this question, start with thinking about the person that you are when you are drinking.  Are you a good role model for your family and friends? Do the people who are the most important to you want to be around you when you are drinking?  Do you have children who you want to remember you the way you are when you are drinking?  Also think about your health.  Continued drinking can lead to continued health problems such as liver diseases, high blood pressure, and heart conditions.  Continued drinking could potentially get you in trouble with the law.

What are the positives about quitting drinking?

When you think about getting help for your alcohol addiction, the first thing you are likely to think about is your improved health.  Your body and your mind will start to work better.  Your liver can heal from some ailments over time.  So can your skin and your heart.  You will start to look younger.  When you quit your alcohol addiction, you will have more money to spend on other things, and you will be able to be more responsible for yourself and others.

What are the negatives about quitting drinking?

The biggest thing you will miss when you quit drinking is the friends you have made who participate in and fuel your drinking habit.  These friends will likely not be able to be part of your life when you stop drinking because you will need to stay away from alcohol related events and gatherings for a while after your recovery is complete.

The Ultimate Question: Could You Stop Drinking?

The next big question you will need to tackle is that of whether or not you could stop drinking if you wanted to.  Alcohol addiction is a big hurdle to jump over.  You have to be ready to quit to make it worth the effort of trying.  You will have to be ready for the possibility of change and take the steps to make that change possible.  Healing from any kind of addiction is a lot easier if you are ready to heal.  If you do not want to be seeking treatment for alcohol addiction, it is more likely that you will not succeed in finding complete abstinence.

So are you ready to make this decision to change your life? Are you ready to find the life that you want to have and keep it?  Only you know the answer to any of these questions.
